  • Amazon Web Services announces its own custom-designed ARM server processor

Each of the companies operate ground facilities already but will work with AWS Ground Station to augment operations. "And it is also expensive", he said, adding "space is hard, and getting data to and from orbiting satellites can be even harder".

Pricing is typically flexible, charged per-minute of downlink time, with an option to pre-pay for blocks of minutes, something AWS asserts could save customers 80 percent on their current ground station costs.

Earlier this month, Amazon Web Services (AWS), the largest public cloud services provider, announced that its cloud business would make AMD's EPYC server chips available to its customers. AWS said these companies and many more are using AWS to drive cost savings, accelerate innovation, and speed up time-to-market. Satellite operators use ground stations to send data back and forth into orbit and require a specialized array of antennas, computing infrastructure and networks. The energy-efficient processors - dubbed Graviton - are available now as a service on AWS.

Lastly, AWS IoT Greengrass Connectors is a new feature for AWS IoT Greengrass that enables web and mobile developers to connect to third-party apps such as ServiceNow for service management and Splunk for log analytics.

AWS has helped Guardian get ahead of insurance industry disruption driven by new technology and changing customer expectations, and enabled us to innovate and provide services how, when and where our customers prefer, said Dean Del Vecchio, Executive Vice President, Chief Information Officer, and Head of Enterprise Shared Services at Guardian.

"They will be able to ingest data straight into AWS, where they can securely store, analyse, and transmit products to their customers without needing to worry about building all of the infrastructure themselves", said Bell. With AWS Ground Station, AWS handles every aspect of the satellite data retrieval and processing operation for the company, greatly reducing the cost and complexity associated with it.

AWS says satellites are being used by more and more businesses, universities and governments for a variety of applications, including weather forecasting, surface imaging and communications.

At present, AWS Ground Station has space firms and satellite imaging companies like Lockheed Martin, BlackSky and Open Cosmos as part of its clientele. "We provide direct access to AWS services and AWS Global Infrastructure, including our low-latency, global fibre network right where your data is downloaded into our AWS Ground Station".

Lockheed Martin's Verge, or Virtual Resilient Ground, is a cloud-based service for satellite ground control, using a compact, low cost antenna network. The systems are now piloting in Denver area.

Lockheed Martin predicts that there will be 16,000 satellites in the sky over the next decade.

One of the use cases highlighted for the new satellite service was for when natural disasters strike.
