The e-commerce giant is close to agreements that would split the new headquarters between two locales, said one of the people, who asked not to be identified discussing non-public matters. In fact, it now has two chances, not just one, following the WSJ report todaythat Amazon plans to split HQ2 across two cities. Both New York City and Washington, DC, are now suffering from a dearth of affordable housing.

A spokesman for the Dallas Regional Chamber declined to comment.

"By building two headquarters, Amazon can tap different geographic regions for talent, including some who may not want to move too far from home", reported The Wall Street Journal.

Long Island City and Crystal City would meet Amazon's requirements for a new locale: Both are near metropolitan areas with more than a million people, have nearby global airports, direct access to mass transit and have room for the company to expand. The decision to split into two sites could alleviate some of that resistance.Seattle has been one of the fastest growing cities in the country, in part because of Amazon's growth. By choosing more than a single location, it may be seeking to avoid criticism that its arrival will burden local infrastructure. Texas has a lower cost of living and no state income tax.

Amazon is in the final days of its journey to decide which city or cities will host its second headquarters, with the company saying that its pick will be made before the end of 2018.

Selecting those areas would bring more jobs to places that already have plenty. However, the news outlet says that doesn't mean the city should be "counted out". The mayor's office has been leading tours of the area since April and convened officials from several New York City universities to outline ways to meet Amazon's needs, this person said.

Crystal City is a neighborhood in Arlington County in the state of Virginia. It's also got quick access to LaGuardia and John F. Kennedy International airports. Nearly 240 municipalities responded, trying to lure the tech giant with marketing gimmicks, promises of new transit lines and, as proposals trickled out, billions in tax incentives. The details of most bids are not public, to the frustration of even some lawmakers. Many experts have named the Washington area as a front runner given Bezos' ownership of the Post and the company's stepped-up lobbying efforts.

Despite many cities competing to house Amazon's "HQ2" because of the thousands of job opportunities and millions that would be generated in tax revenues, the retail colossus has chose to instead split its headquarters over two cities.

Andrew Cuomo is apparently desperate to win Amazon's HQ2. He said winning over Amazon would give an economic boost to the entire state, and joked that he was willing to change his name to "Amazon Cuomo" to lure the company.
