  • Donald Trump casts doubt on Christine Blasey Ford's allegations at a campaign rally in Mississippi

Republican Senator Chuck Grassley of Iowa, the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, said in a tweet that people can "decide who to believe" but everyone should stop the "personal attacks" against Ford, Kavanaugh and their families.

Republicans hold a 51-49 majority in the Senate and a simple majority is needed to advance his nomination.

After filing a cloture petition, lawmakers must wait one legislative day before proceeding to a vote, according to Senate rules.

That means a cloture vote could come tomorrow morning at the earliest.

Mr Flake said on U.S. television: "There's no time and no place for remarks like that, that discuss something this sensitive at a political rally". Flake has not said how he will vote if the nomination comes up this week.

The FBI, which reportedly interviewed several people connected to Ford's claim is expected to release its final report on Thursday.

Federal Bureau of Investigation agents interviewed three people in connection with the allegations made by Christine Blasey Ford, who says that Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her in high school.

It follows explosive hearings from Kavanaugh and the woman accusing him of sexual assault, Christine Blasey Ford.

"Everything he said is factual", Graham said. 'I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. Upstairs, downstairs, where was it? That's the only thing I remember.

"And a man's life is in tatters".

"There is no time and no place for remarks like that, but to discuss something this sensitive subject at a political rally is just not right", he said on NBC's Today Show.

Mr Flake called the president's comments "appalling", and Ms Collins said they were "just plain wrong".

Asked whether Trump's comments would affect her vote, Murkowski told reporters: "I am taking everything into account".

President Trump was cheered on by a crowd of Republican faithful in MS yesterday as he mimicked Dr Ford's responses to questions at last week's Senate hearing and joked about her inability to remember details surrounding the night of her alleged attack. Trump said, echoing one point Blasey Ford did recall.

Flake has previously said that his vote depends on the results of the FBI's investigation and has declined to speculate on whether he would be comfortable voting on Kavanaugh if the probe is not yet completed.

As if the details of Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh's past behavior weren't already painful enough, on Monday night, the New York Times reported that he was once involved in a bar fight with a man he thought was the lead singer of that mostly white reggae band UB40 (of "Red Red Wine" fame).

Trump limited the investigation to no more than a week.

Senators expected to first see the FBI's report from its recent investigation into Kavanaugh on Thursday, Sen. "How did you get there?"

Three wavering Republican senators have lambasted Trump for going after Christine Blasey Ford.

Hundreds of law professors have signed onto a letter urging the Senate to reject Brett Kavanaugh's confirmation to the Supreme Court. This background check, requested by a trio of senators who are undecided on Kavanaugh's confirmation, will be different.

She said Mr Kavanaugh was drunk and had pinned her onto a bed, tried to remove her clothing and put his hand over her mouth when she screamed. She faces three candidates - Republican Chris McDaniel and Democrats Mike Espy and Tobey Bernard Bartee - in next month's special election for the remainder of the two-year term.

Trump's mockery of Ford at a campaign rally on Tuesday night intensified political pressure on senators Jeff Flake of Arizona, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Susan Collins of ME as they consider how they will vote on Kavanaugh.
