On Monday, President Tayyip Erdogan said Turkey was determined to fight, within legal and diplomatic frameworks, "this crooked understanding, which imposes sanctions using the excuse of a pastor who is tried due to his dark links with terror organizations".

Turkey declared a state of emergency for the first time on July 20, 2016 following a defeated coup attempt by the Fetullah Terrorist Organization (FETO) which left 251 people martyred and almost 2,200 injured.

The Turkish authorities detained Brunson on allegations of assisting groups branded as terrorist, part of a crackdown by the Turkish government following the failed coup in 2016.

"We are leaving painful terms in the recent past with Germany behind", Erdogan said. He had breakfast with German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Berlin on Saturday.

This followed a state dinner the night before that was boycotted by several opposition politicians.

But Ankara seems to have adopted a language more conciliatory at a time when its relations with Washington deteriorate and its economy, heavily dependent on trade with Europe, bat wing.

The rhetoric escalated to the point where Erdogan called Germany's mainstream parties "enemies of Turkey" and accused German officials of acting like Nazis, prompting Merkel to condemn his comments.

Since in mid-2016, arms sales from Germany to Turkey have fallen dramatically.

Interpretations of the controversial visit varied wildly in Turkey and Germany, with Mr Erdogan boasting it was a hugely successful but the conservative German press complaining the red carpet treatment brought nothing but hassle and expense.

Mr Pierini said the visit "illustrated sharp divergences on rule of law, especially freedom of speech and freedom of dissent".
