  • Arthur Ashkin, Gérard Mourou and Donna Strickland Win 2018 Nobel Prize In Physics For Laser Inventions

Three scientists won the Nobel Prize in Physics on Tuesday for their work with lasers.

The Swedish Royal Academy of Sciences today awarded half the 9-million-kronor (US$1.01 million) prize to Arthur Ashkin of the United States and the other half will be shared by Strickland and France's Gerard Mourou.

Dr Ashkin developed a laser technique described as optical tweezers, which is used to study biological systems. Mourou and Strickland share a quarter of the prize each "for their method of generating high-intensity, ultra-short optical pulses", the Nobel committee said.

She becomes the third woman to receive the #NobelPrize in Physics, joining Maria Goeppert-Mayer (1963) and Marie Curie (1903).

A Canadian has professor ended a 55-year drought for female physicists after being awarded the prestigious Nobel Prize for physics.

The 59-year-old Guelph, Ont., native made the discovery while completing her PhD at the University of Rochester in NY and will share half of the US$1.01-million prize with her doctoral adviser, French physicist Gerard Mourou.

Strickland said she recognizes that her new status as a Nobel victor may boost her status as a role model for young women wishing to pursue a career in science, adding those with such dreams should go out and pursue them.

"I'm very old and had given up worrying about things like Nobel Prizes", he told The Associated Press.

Jim Al-Khalili, professor of theoretical physics at Britain's University of Surrey, said on Twitter it was "delicious" that Strickland had won the Nobel prize just days after Strumia's "misogynistic" comments. Ashkin always had a dream: Imagine if beams of light could be put to work and made to move objects.

Strickland is the first female Nobel laureate in any field in three years. The award was granted for groundbreaking inventions in the field of laser physics.

We've got more newsletters we think you'll find interesting. A breakthrough came in 1987 when he used the new optical tweezers to grab living bacteria without harming them. It is used most frequently in laser eye surgery, but there are many other applications, including in ultra-fast cameras used for imaging molecular processes. They first stretched out the laser pulse in time by several orders of magnitude, thereby reducing their peak power, then passed the stretched pulse through an amplifier, and finally compressed the pulse again in time to produce a short pulse with much enhanced power.
