Trump suggests ‘rogue killers’ murdered Saudi journalist

  • Saudi media: Any US sanctions over Khashoggi would ‘stab its own economy to death’

Stocks have dropped as much as 9% since Khashoggi disappeared on October 2 after walking into the Saudi consulate in Istanbul. Germany, Britain and France issued a joint statement over the weekend expressing "grave concern" and calling for a credible investigation to ensure those responsible for the disappearance "are held to account".

Saudi Arabia is also reversing their cooling rhetoric on oil prices, warning that the Saudi government will not be hitting its oil production quotas, and will no longer rule out barrels hitting $100 or even higher, in a direct threat to President Trump's current stance on oil prices, who has frequently demanded that OPEC nations including Saudi Arabia do more to suppress currently-rising oil costs across the globe.

"As necessity now arises to clarify the facts associated with this crisis in a neutral and honest manner, we reaffirm our categorical rejection of the repercussions of the politicised anti-Saudi campaign".

Pro-government Turkish media on Wednesday published new allegations that Khashoggi was killed by being gradually dismembered in the consulate by a Saudi assassination squad.

Saudi Arabia's riyal was quoted at 3.7514 to the US dollar in the spot market early on Monday, its weakest rate since June 2017, Refinitiv data showed, as the kingdom faced pressure over missing journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

Flake said if the Saudis did, in fact, kill Khashoggi, Congress might specifically curtail USA military aid to Saudi-led forces in Yemen.

"If they don't buy it from us, they're going to buy it from Russian Federation or they're going to buy it from China or they're going to buy it from other countries", he said. Trump said he didn't "want to get into (Salman's) mind", but told reporters: "it sounded to me like maybe these could have been rogue killers".

A SoftBank spokesman declined to confirm if SoftBank executives are still planning to attend next week's conference, which has become the biggest show for investors to promote Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's reform vision.

Saudi Arabia is now facing growing worldwide pressure to explain the disappearance of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi. Saudi Arabia meanwhile said King Salman thanked Erdogan "for welcoming the kingdom's proposal" for forming the working group.

"I think we need to continue to evaluate the facts and we'll make that decision", he said.

Saudi Arabia has pledged to retaliate economically for any US punitive action.

White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow said Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin still plans to attend a previously scheduled Saudi conference this week to address terrorist financing, but those plans could change as the investigation progresses.

Trump said he'd made clear the stakes. Saudi officials assert - without providing proof - that he left the embassy, but Turkish officials believe he may have been murdered.

The furor over Khashoggi has dealt a serious setback to Prince Mohammed's aggressive pitch for the kingdom as a destination for foreign investment.
