Kenya is the third stop on Mrs Trump's African tour, which began on Tuesday in Ghana and continued in Malawi on Thursday.

A white woman on the roadside held up a handmade sign as the first lady's motorcade passed that said "Melania Me Too".

The event was to "highlight friendly US-Malawi relations" and the pair's "shared interest in helping children and, in particular, helping girls in school", according to the White House.

With a smile on her face, the first lady read along with children during their lessons.

The visit is expected to interrupt a number of activities, including a partial shutdown of the busy Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).

"I was heartened to spend time with the students and was honoured to donate school supplies and soccer balls", she said.
