The FBI is looking into claims that women have been asked to make false accusations of sexual harassment against Special Counsel Robert Mueller in exchange for money - but all may not be as it seems.
The special counsel's office issued a press statement announcing that the office has asked the FBI to investigate an apparent campaign to smear Mueller - in the middle of the counsel's probe into whether members of President Donald Trump's immediate circle conspired with Russians to influence the 2016 election.
The plot first came to light through one of the emails referred to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, sent to journalists on October 17 by a woman named Lorraine Parsons who said that a man had contacted her with questions about Mueller because she had worked as a paralegal with him at a law firm in 1974.
The plan unravelled across USA media on Tuesday, one day after Jacob Wohl, a 20-year-old conservative blogger, tweeted on Monday night that a "scandalous" story about Mr Mueller was about to break.
Carr's statement came on the same day that a conservative radio and podcast host known for promoting conspiracy theories, Jack Burkman, announced plans to "unveil the first of the sex assault victims of Robert Mueller" on Thursday.
"This started w/ a person claiming to be "Lorraine" emailing that "she" worked with Mueller at a law firm in 1974".
According to the special counsel's office, they were informed of the "scheme" by journalists who were approached by a woman who said that conservative commentator and lobbyist Jack Burkman offered her $20,000 "to make accusations of sexual misconduct and workplace harassment against Robert Mueller".
"Mueller has done bad things to a number of women, the first of whom is coming out this Thursday".
The smear campaign appeared to emanate from a company called Surefire Intelligence, which seems to be connected to former teenage hedge fund manager and pro-Trump cheerleader, Jacob Wohl, NBC reported. "The only time I've seen him is on TV", she said in an interview with VTDigger.
The special counsel office broke its usual silence on Tuesday to confirm to United States media it had been made aware of the saga.
Trump and his allies have long tried to discredit Mueller, accusing him of orchestrating a politically motivated "witch hunt", even though his probe into the President's campaign has produced dozens of indictments against Trump associates and Russian government operatives, including Trump's former campaign chairman Paul Manafort and national security adviser Michael Flynn. He has repeatedly called on President Trump to fire Mr. Mueller, Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who oversees the Mueller probe.
