Roger Federer was stretched to three sets for a second consecutive match to reach the Shanghai Masters quarterfinals on Thursday.

Federer said that two stern encounters had set him up nicely for Nishikori on Friday.

But in the ninth game of the deciding set, Federer made the breakthrough on his opponent's serve, pumping his fist as another hard-won victory loomed into view. He went up a break at the start of the second set, but then trailed 4-1 in the tiebreaker.

"It's important (to get back to No. 2) and I am grateful that I have this achievement".

"It was one of the best matches of my life", Coric said.

One player who will not be in the quarter-finals is Juan Martin del Potro after he hobbled out of the tournament.

The world number five - who beat Djokovic in their only previous meeting, past year in the Rome Masters final - recovered his poise for a time.

The pair have only met once before at the Rome Masters in 2017, where Zverev breezed past Djokovic in straight sets. He played the Laver Cup in Chicago defeating the Australian Nick Kyrgios and the American John Isner in singles matches, but '[I] have also had some rest.

"It's great to finally officially make it and again be a part of the best eight, which is an elite group", the 21-year-old said. "There's a lot of positives to take from my matches this week". Djokovic didn't give the South African another opportunity.

The first set in Shanghai was a see-saw affair, with seven breaks of serve between the two. Dominic Thiem, who lost his opening match this week, sits in second place with 48 match wins this season.

Djokovic, who endured a turbulent last season with injury and off-court issues, said they were "both different players" now. "Obviously I don't want to stop here".

"The rest, he had more chances than I had".
