  • Report: Twins to hire Baldelli, 37, as manager

After eight seasons as a scout and bench coach for Tampa Bay, this morning, Baldelli got his big break.

The Minnesota Twins began the offseason by dismissing manager Paul Molitor.

Molitor was named the American League Manager of the Year in 2017. The Hall of Famer was offered a front-office role to remain with the organization. Baldelli will be the first major league manager born in the 1980s. He has no managerial experience and has spent the last four seasons as a coach for the Tampa Bay Rays. But the front office let Molitor go and started looking for a manager they felt would build closer relationships with, and nurture, talented young players such as Byron Buxton and Miguel Sano, top prospects whose careers became grounded last season.

For the past four years, Baldelli has coached for the Tampa Bay Rays, where he played six of his seven seasons as an Major League Baseball outfielder.

As a player, Baldelli hit.278 with 60 home runs and 262 RBIs across seven seasons between 2003-10.

Molitor was named American League Manager of the Year in 2017 and was sacked with two years remaining on his contract.

The team's previous manager, Paul Molitor, was sacked in early October after the Twins finished with a disappointing 78-84 record. The only year as a professional he spent apart from the Rays was 2009, when he played in 62 games for the Boston Red Sox.

The Minnesota Twins ended their 2018 season with a 78-84 record.
