  • 'Where Is Jamal?' Here's What to Know About Missing Washington Post Columnist Jamal Khashoggi

"Efforts are being made to clarify allegations about Khashoggi".

Since then, reports as to his whereabouts have been conflicting.

"The consulate confirmed that it is carrying out follow-up procedures and coordination with the Turkish local authorities to uncover the circumstances of the disappearance", the SPA said.

Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman dismissed remarks by Donald Trump in which the US president said he had warned the king he would not last in power "for two weeks" without USA military backing and demanded he pay up. "If this is the case, [the consulate] should let their "guest" go", Turan Kışlakçı, a Turkish journalist and friend of Khashoggi told reporters after reading a statement on behalf of the nonprofit Turkish-Arab Media Association, which is monitoring the case. In the spring, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman described Turkey as one part of a "triangle of evil" with Iran and Islamic extremists. The woman told reporters that Khashoggi asked her to alert friends if he did not return, apparently anxious about being held there; though it was his second visit to the consulate in weeks for routine paperwork.

Saudi Arabia is now pumping about 10.7 million barrels a day - close to a record - and can add a further 1.3 million "if the market needs that", the prince said. In return, Saudi Arabia has created armaments and investment opportunities, and other trade opportunities over a period of time.

Turkish officials say Khashoggi remains inside the consulate, and his fiancee, who was waiting for him outside, also says she never saw him come out.

Khashoggi is a longtime Saudi journalist, foreign correspondent, editor and columnist whose work has been controversial in the past in the ultraconservative Sunni kingdom.

Khashoggi's disappearance could complicate already fraught ties between Ankara and Riyadh.

It said Turkey's Deputy Foreign Minister Yavuz Selim Kiran told the ambassador that the issue "should be cleared up immediately".

"Where is Jamal?" Hatice said.

A demonstrator holds picture of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi during a protest in front of Saudi Arabia's consulate in Istanbul, Turkey, October 5, 2018. "The Kuwaiti side, they want to fix it today, before we continue to produce in that area", he said.

Yemeni activist and 2011 victor of the Nobel Peace Prize Tawakkol Karman was among the demonstrators and hit out at the Saudi authorities.

"As journalists, we are anxious about the fate of Jamal".

In a statement carried by the state-run Saudi Press Agency, the consulate did not challenge that Khashoggi, 59, had disappeared while on a visit to the diplomatic post. "I see him as not only a colleague in our field but an inspiration, too", Attiah wrote. "I won't be able to rest easy until you appear safe and sound".
