  • Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi shows the way to U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo before a meeting at the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse in Beijing

In Pyongyang on Sunday, Pompeo and Kim met for about 3 1/2 hours, first in a business session and then in a 90-minute luncheon that the North Korean leader hosted at a state guesthouse.

"We continue to make progress on agreements made at Singapore summit", Pompeo tweeted shortly after arriving in Seoul.

Mr Pompeo's trip came after a stalemate between the two countries after North Korea resisted demands for the country to give up its nuclear arsenal.

Mike Pompeo said North Korea and the US are getting "pretty close" to agreeing on terms for their second summit.

"Together with Mike Pompeo, Kim Jong Un appreciated the positively developing situation on the Korean peninsula, explained in detail the proposals for solving the denuclearization issue and matters of concern of both sides and exchanged constructive opinions", KCNA said.

At last month's inter-Korean summit, the North expressed its willingness to close the Yongbyon nuclear complex if Washington takes corresponding action, which Moon said would include a declaration of an end to the 1950-53 Korean War. "But we will get there".

Last month, the North's foreign minister told the United Nations there was "no way" his country would disarm first as long as tough U.S. sanctions remain against his country.

The top U.S. diplomat also said both sides were "pretty close" to agreement on the details of a second summit, which Kim proposed to U.S. President Donald Trump in a letter last month. Trump canceled Pompeo's planned trip to Pyongyang in August, citing little evidence that North Korea had followed through on any of its commitments to denuclearize.

Speaking to reporters in South Korea's capital, Seoul, on Monday, Pompeo said "significant progress" was made towards the "long process" of denuclearisation during a meeting with Kim on Sunday in the North Korean capital, Pyongyang. "We will be having more frequent and higher level working level group discussions than we have had in some time".

Soon after the secretary of state left the country on his last visit, North Korea issued a statement lambasting his "gangster-like" demands.

Kim praised their "nice meeting", telling Pompeo via an interpreter following the morning's talks that it was "a very nice day that promises a good future. for both countries".

"I don't have much to add", Mr Pompeo replied.

Before visiting Pyongyang, Pompeo held talks in Tokyo with Japan's prime minister, and pledged that the Trump administration would coordinate and unify its strategy for denuclearization with its allies.

Since Trump and Kim met in Singapore in June, US-North Korea relations have stalled.

Stressing that these moves have directly impacted on the mutual trust and cast shadows on the prospects of China-U.S. relations, Wang urged the United States to stop making negative remarks immediately. Add North Korea as an interest to stay up to date on the latest North Korea news, video, and analysis from ABC News.

Pompeo, however, played down the differences. "I would certainly expect so", the official said.

The two countries have, however, been in a standoff over what the term denuclearisation means. And so there'll be tactical places where we'll have debates and disagreements, that is a necessary component of getting to the best deliverable.

A senior USA official said getting a deal on denuclearisation is going to be a "long haul" in the immediate aftermath of Mr Pompeo's fourth visit to the isolated state's capital city.

Kim also invited inspectors to visit the Punggye Ri nuclear test site to confirm that it has been irreversibly dismantled, Nauert said. It has not taken any steps to halt nuclear weapons or missile development.
