Mexican ambassador makes a stunning accusation about migrant caravan from Honduras

  • Trump appears to threaten USMCA deal when lashing out at migrant caravan

According to the Associated Press, "Thousands of migrants massed along Guatemala's muddy Suchiate River crossing into Mexico on Friday, demanding to be let in despite U.S. President Donald Trump's threats of retaliation".

"Don't continue putting women's and children's lives at risk", a Mexican official pleaded with the crowd through a bullhorn.

But at least five U.S. states later refused to send the troops amid an outcry over a since-abandoned White House policy to separate migrant children from their parents at the border.

Foreign Minister Videgaray said his government had asked the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to help process the migrants in order to guarantee transparency and so that Mexico could cope with a "higher volume of requests".

Mexico's government says migrants with proper documents can enter and those who don't either have to apply for refugee status or face deportation. She said she thought Trump's proposal to construct a border wall between the USA and Mexico would be "expensive" and "ineffective" at stopping immigrants.

Fox News reported on Thursday that Mexico and the United States had reached a deal on how to handle the migrant caravan.

"There is nothing there", Orellana said.

This is the latest and one of the largest caravans to make the journey.

Some migrants are now forming lines on the bridge while others are sitting down and preparing for a long wait.

Jonathan Guzman, who joined the mass procession caravan en route, said he dreams of finding a construction job in Los Angeles. "It's the third time that I'm trying to cross", said the 22-year-old who dreams of finding a construction job in Los Angeles.

Mexico in April pushed back on Trump's threats and rhetoric, with Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto saying in a video statement on Twitter that "We're not going to permit that negative rhetoric to define our actions".

In part, the response is meant to both dissuade the migrants from even attempting to enter Mexico and potentially to show the Trump administration that Mexico is willing to, as the government put it, "maintain order".

Donald Trump has threatened to send the U.S. military to close the border with Mexico in angry early-morning tweets.

Migrants poured through Guatemalan border posts in the town of Tecun Uman and onto a bridge leading to Mexico, only to be halted by dozens of Mexican police in riot gear.

But experts on refugees say those moves are unlikely to stop this caravan or stem future ones, since the migrants are primarily driven by conditions in their home countries, not US policy.

The developments on Friday came as Mike Pompeo prepared to fly to Mexico to discuss migration with the country's officials.

The foreign secretary noted that 1 million people transit the border legally every day, and about $1 million in commerce crosses every minute.

He claimed on Thursday that Democrats are backing the human movement to bolster their case for "open borders and existing weak laws".
