Interpol president Meng Hongwei reported missing after trip to China

France has opened an investigation into the disappearance of Meng Hongwei, the Chinese head of the global police agency Interpol.

Details about the case are still emerging; as for where Meng is believed to have gone missing, a source tells Agence France-Presse, "He did not disappear in France".

According to his own page on the site, Meng's last official engagement was on August 23, when he met Lai Chung Han, a second permanent secretary of Singapore. He is a veteran of China's police and security systems, serving as the country's vice minister of public security and the head of the country's Interpol bureau.

The president of global police group, Interpol, has allegedly gone missing after he went to China.

The head of Interpol has been reported missing, a French judicial official has said. His term is due to run until 2020.

Interpol's main function is to provide a mechanism for police forces in different countries to notify each other of wanted suspects.

The statement noted that Interpol's secretary general, and not its president, is responsible for the worldwide police agency's operations.

Interpol - headquartered in Lyon, France - is an global organization facilitating police cooperation across borders.

Xi has also placed a premium on obtaining the return of officials and businesspeople accused of fraud and corruption from overseas, making Meng's position all the more sensitive.
