  • Why will Roger Federer play until Tokyo 2020

The world number 93, the first player from qualifying to go this far here since Marcos Baghdatis in 2005, will face the victor from eight-time champion Roger Federer and Russian Daniil Medvedev.

Roger Federer was pushed hard to beat Gilles Simon 7-6 (1), 4-6, 6-4 on Friday in the Swiss Indoors quarterfinals in Basel, Switzerland.

The 37-year-old Swiss has won his hometown event eight times and is now one step away from retaining his crown and collecting a 99th career title after he advanced to the semi-finals.

Romanian 28-year-old Copil served 26 aces in his victory over world number five Zverev as he reached the second ATP final of his career.

The Swiss crowd favourite was never able to comfortably take command against an opponent whom he had defeated in their last six meetings. "I feel good right now".

His qualification means there are two places still up for grabs ahead of the Paris Masters, with Croatian Marin Cilic, Austrian Dominic Thiem, Nishikori and American John Isner still in the race.

It's the second final of the year for Copil.

"This was nearly a turnaround week for me", the Swiss legend said.

Simon responded, however, breaking Federer three times in the second set to force a third.

The 20-time Grand Slam champion will have to re-group quickly for the semis, where he will play the victor from Greek breakthrough player Stefanos Tsitsipas and Daniil Medvedev.

He traded breaks with Federer before the local hero snaffled the tiebreak seven points to five. He kept his foot on the pedal in the second, racing to a comfortable 4-0 lead but had to fight to emerge the victor.

Federer quickly fell behind 3-0 to open the match but clawed back to 5-5 with a break after squandering four previous break points.

Federer put the pressure on Simon's serve after battling back from 15-40 down in the 10th game and Simon crumbled with two straight errors.
