The City of Angels is celebrating its first-ever Indigenous Peoples Day with a series of events throughout the day Monday.

"It's very in vogue politically right now to do that", said festival board member Joseph Contino, noting how cities across the country have started celebrating Indigenous Peoples Day in recent years. "It was terrifying to go out and speak in front of 1,000 people", she said.

The inaugural observance was to be capped Monday night with an outdoor concert headlined by the Grammy-winning group Black Eyed Peas and the Native American rock band Redbone. "We can't wait to keep the message of "love and music" alive on stage on October 8".

Today, Columbus Day is not celebrated at all. However, if you're expecting something from UPS, you're in luck - while the company recognizes Columbus Day, they don't close for the holiday.

I come from Laguna Pueblo and the Yuma Nation, and even in my small reservation border town ― where many of us children were Pueblo, Apache, Ute and Navajo ― Columbus Day was taken seriously by my elementary school teachers. The mayor's office has said this decision is not connected to the nationwide movement to rename Columbus Day as "Indigenous Peoples Day" because of Columbus's enslavement and exploitation of native people.

Christopher Columbus may be the man who sailed the ocean blue in 1492, but when it comes to celebrating his national holiday, Eastern students and staff have different views.

"(Columbus sailed) west across the Atlantic and (made) the initial discovery of the Americas, the western hemisphere, its islands and its people", he said.

With the first Indigenous Peoples Day in San Francisco wrapped up, it's important to recognize the truth of American history as told by the descendants of America's real ancestors.

"As we mark this rich history, we must also acknowledge the pain and suffering reflected in the stories of Native Americans who had long resided on this land prior to the arrival of European newcomers", Obama wrote, citing "violence, deprivation, and disease".

But others disagreed and said the holiday should be changed.

"You don't really leave a good impression when you rape and pillage people and steal their jewelry or their fine crafts, and just kind of get out".

"It's something that we can not stand idly by and have celebrated as a national holiday when the atrocities that this individual committed are documented", he says.
