US intelligence officials have mounting circumstantial evidence of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's involvement in the death of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, The New York Times reports.

"Trump's getting some criticism for his bold soft-on-murder stance, but some people still have his back", Colbert said, showing a clip of televangelist Pat Robertson "downplaying Khashoggi's murder and prioritizing the financial benefit of siding with Saudi Arabia", notably when it comes to arms sales.

Trump stopped short of accusing the Saudis of killing Khashoggi, but he said there would be "very severe" consequences if it turns out they did.

"Turkey and Saudi Arabia are looking at it very strongly and it depends if the king or crown prince knew about it, in my opinion".

At least in media reports, the Turks have claimed to have irrefutable evidence of the murder, supposedly even to the length of time it took to kill Khashoggi and dismember him.

Trump's son-in-law and Middle East adviser, has been urging the president to stand by Prince Mohammed, according to a person close to the White House and a former official with knowledge of the discussions.

Turkey today pledged to share with the world the results of its investigation into the suspected murder of the missing journalist Jamal Khashoggi as investigators searched woods and a farm outside Istanbul for his remains.

Saudi Arabia has denied the allegations.

The pro-government Turkish newspaper Yeni Safak on Wednesday reported that an audio recording of Khashoggi's slaying suggests a Saudi team accosted him after he entered the consulate, cutting off his fingers and later decapitating him. A resident of Virginia and contributor to The Washington Post, Mr. Khashoggi was last seen entering the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul on October 2.

If Riyadh finds a scapegoat and absolves senior members of the royal family over the disappearance of The Washington Post columnist in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul two weeks ago, Trump may accept it.

Turkish sources have told Reuters the authorities have an audio recording indicating Khashoggi, a us resident who wrote columns for the Washington Post, was killed.

In Istanbul, Turkish investigators for a second time searched the Saudi consulate, where Khashoggi vanished, in a hunt for clues. But we'll see what happens'.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has said it is a pity that Mr Khashoggi has gone missing, but that Russia can not damage relations with Saudi Arabia without hard facts.

The sudden cash windfall raised some eyebrows on Wednesday, given the ongoing investigation into Khashoggi's disappearance, but United States officials denied that the swift transfer of cash between Saudi Arabia and the U.S. had anything to do with Pompeo's visit to Riyadh.

While it's true Khashoggi was drawn toward more radical streams of thought in his youth, he later moved toward a liberal, secular point of view, those who have tracked his career say.

The Saudi consul general reportedly is heard on tape saying, "Do this outside; you're going to get me in trouble".
