  • Aasia Bibi Won’t be Executed, Pakistan SC Rules in Blasphemy Case

Instead, Bibi was arrested, tried and sentenced to death in a case that drew worldwide attention to the blasphemy law. She was sentenced to execution by hanging.

The allegations against Ms Bibi date back to 2009, when she was working in a field and was asked to fetch water.

Several points on the Lahore-Islamabad Motorway, including the Babu Sabu, Faizpur, Sheikhupura and Kala Shah Kaku interchanges have been blocked by protesters demonstrating against the Supreme Court's verdict. Bibi told AFP by phone from prison after the ruling.

The ACLJ noted, however, "the danger for this Christian mother of 5 is not over".

The ultra-Islamist Tehreek-e-Labaik Pakistan (TLP) party, which makes punishing blasphemy its main campaign rallying cry, earlier this month warned the court against any "concession or softness" for Ms. Bibi. Rangers were deployed around the court and other parts of the capital.

She was not in court to hear the ruling.

"For the past eight years, Asia Bibi's life languished in limbo", said Omar Waraich, deputy South Asia director for Amnesty International.

The verdict and the immediate aftermath of it are enormous of Pakistan. The death threats that have been issued against Asia and the justices should be taken seriously.

The TLP's leadership called for the death of Nasif, the chief justice, and two other judges on the panel.

"We need to keep them in [our] prayers as well".

Chief Justice Saqib Nasir, who headed a special three-person bench set up for the appeal, cited the Koran in his ruling, writing "Tolerance is the basic principle of Islam" and noting the religion condemns injustice and oppression. "She be released from jail forthwith..."

"I can't believe it". The judgement of the high court as well as trial court is reversed. "We can [only] run this country according to the Constitution and law".

The women said her faith had made a cup she used unclean and she should convert to Islam.

The media has been prevented from discussing the case since the verdict was reserved on 8 October.

However, if the court decides to free Bibi, she is likely not safe.

Bibi's husband hailed Wednesday's verdict. It ended with a quote from the Hadith, the collected sayings of the Prophet Muhammad, which calls for non-Muslims to be treated kindly. Later, the guard, Mumtaz Qadri, was hanged for the assassination - a move that infuriated supporters of firebrand Muslim cleric Khadim Hussain Rizvi, who launched a violent drive to block any possible changes in the law. "We don't go out of our home and if we go, we come out very carefully", he said. "We will jam [lay siege to traffic] the country and the entire responsibility of it will be on the government".

Mahira Khan speaks out after the Supreme Court verdict and people have been quite intense.

"This is an incredibly unsafe time, not only for Asia Bibi and the justices deciding her case, but the entire Christian community", the ACLJ reported.
