20 hurt as Rome metro escalator speeds up, then collapses

A video shown on Sky TG24 shows the escalator accelerating suddenly, and the people riding down on it collapsing one onto another.

At least 20 people have been hurt after an escalator collapsed at an underground station in Rome.

The station was overrun with CSKA Moscow fans as they headed to the Stadio Olimpico for the Russian team's match against Roma.

People on the parallel escalator can be seen trying to grab those on the broken machine and pull them to safety. Emergency officials are responding to the scene.

"A total of 30 people were injured: seven of them are in grave condition; five others are moderate and 18 were only slightly wounded", a Russian embassy in Rome spokesman told Tass.

Fire brigade spokesman Luca Cari said that the cause of the accident is still being investigated and that one person was seriously injured. The Italian newspaper La Repubblica reported that one victim's foot was partially severed.

Many fans sustained cuts to their legs by shattered metal and glass.

La Repubblica website said the escalator broke after singing and chanting fans started to jump up and down on it.
