  • N Korea holds military parade without advanced missiles

A high-ranking Chinese official who is visiting North Korea has conveyed China's President Xi Jinping's personal letter to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, according to Chinese news reports.

The past two big anniversaries of North Korea's founding, in 2008 and 2013, did not feature the Korean People's Army, only the civil defense units, which are officially called "Worker Peasant Red Guards". "Much better than before I took office", Mr Trump tweeted.

A huge float was decorated with a modern train, solar panels, wind power plants and dams, under a slogan of "All our might to build economy!", as North Korean men in construction work wear marched.

Since their June 12 meeting, which many in the United States and around the world have criticized as being merely a photo op without any substance, the two sides have held several meetings but also engaged in mutual recriminations over failing to make sufficient progress on the points ostensibly agreed to in Singapore.

The message from the group, that directs its propaganda mainly at the South, included a condemnation of the United States for the "most barbaric massacre" during the 1950-53 Korean War.

Mr Li had travelled to North Korea as a special envoy of President Xi.

Xi said that he and Kim had reached important consensus during their three meetings this year, opening a new chapter in the development of China-DPRK relations.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un's sister Yo-jong appeared in public for the first time in three months.

Russian Federation and China both have land borders with North Korea and were its allies in the Korean conflict in the early 1950s.

But too militaristic a display this time might have risked upsetting the recent diplomatic dalliance on the peninsula, after Kim's Singapore meeting with Trump in June and his third summit with the South's President Moon Jae-in due in Pyongyang later this month.

Yet this year, following Kim's multi-polar charm offensive - which some pundits believe is a desperate strategy to break out of his global isolation, while others believe it is a a natural progression now that he has essentially finalized his nuclear deterrent - Kim and Xi have met three times.

Although North Korea stages military parades nearly every year, and held one just before the Olympics began in South Korea in February this year, Sunday's parade came at a particularly sensitive time.

They support North Korea's denuclearisation and abide by worldwide sanctions against Pyongyang, but have rejected Trump's threats of military action made past year.

Mr Kim reciprocated with an expression of appreciation, saying, "Currently North Korea is following a strategic line of focusing on economic development".

The parade to mark the 70th anniversary of the founding of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea began with ranks of soldiers, followed by tanks, trucks carrying rocket launchers and heavy artillery.

Sunday's parade came just days after a high-level South Korean delegation had returned from a meeting with Kim in Pyongyang. He claims to have perfected his nuclear arsenal enough to deter USA aggression and devote his resources to raising his nation's standard of living.

Participants perform during the Arirang Mass Games in Pyongyang, North Korea, Sept. 9, 2018. This year's spectacle - tickets start at just over $100 and go up to more than $800 per seat - also has a strong economic theme.
