Theresa May rejects calls for a general election over Brexit

  • Sterling bounces on Brexit hopes, but Tory conference keeps investors wary

May has a working majority of just 13 in the 650-seat parliament and a former junior minister said this month as many as 80 of her own lawmakers were prepared to vote against a Brexit deal based on the Chequers proposals.

The pound initially fell versus the euro before finding its feet as the single currency weakened in NY trading.

This would appear to leave no time for Corbyn's Labour to overthrow May's Conservatives and to negotiate their own Brexit package.

With little in the way of big market-moving economic data in the near-term, domestic politics and sentiment around Brexit talks remain the driver for the pound.

Her blueprint, which opponents say will keep Britain allied to some aspects of European Union rules and regulations, has faced continued criticism from some of her own ministers and members of her Conservative party.

Labour party leader Jeremy Corbyn has long opposed the idea of a new Brexit referendum, saying the party must respect voters' decision to leave.

More than 100 constituency parties tabled motions calling for a second referendum, and thousands of People's Vote supporters marched through Liverpool to intensify pressure on Mr Corbyn.

"If she gets us to that chaos where there is "no deal", that there is no agreement in the British Parliament and we are heading off the cliff of "no deal", then it is absolutely right that she should make way".

With the United Kingdom and the European Union now at an impasse in divorce talks, and just six months to go until Britain officially leaves on March 29, many Labour members think the party should try to force a new referendum that could reverse Britain's decision to quit the 28-nation bloc.

"We, the Labour Party, are going to vote down a bad deal or we're going to vote down no deal because that is not good for our country nor is it what people voted for".

His comments come the day before he will visit European Union chief Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier in Brussels.

She will go on to say she has a plan for an economy that is "knowledge-rich, highly-innovative, highly-skilled and high quality but with low tax and smart regulation".

With announcements ranging from handing workers shares in companies to expanding free universal childcare, Labour wanted to showcase their planning for an election many feel could come sooner rather than later. "If they don't meet our six tests, we will vote against it, and then we will take it from there", he said in a television interview.

"Of course, to a significant extent, this also depends on what Britain really wants - the discussion isn't so clear here", she said. The Labour leader, Jeremy Corbyn, is known to be a lifelong Euroskeptic.

She added that a second referendum was "hypothetical", adding: "What we have said is that, in a very extreme set of circumstances, nothing should be ruled out, and that includes a People's Vote".

Speaking to reporters as she flew to NY for a meeting of the United Nations General Assembly, Mrs May said: "What I'm doing is working to deliver a good deal with Europe in the national interest".
