Former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort is expected to plead guilty to charges filed special counsel on conspiracy against the USA and conspiracy to obstruct justice.
A second case was opened in Virginia earlier this year on related charges that ended with a jury finding Manafort guilty on eight counts out of an 18-count indictment, facing a maximum of 80 years behind the bars, though under sentencing guidelines the term is likely to be closer to seven years.
Note: This article has been updated with news that Manafort's plea deal is a cooperation agreement.
Manafort would plead guilty to one count of conspiracy against the United States and one count of conspiracy to obstruct justice, according to documents filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia on Friday.
Manafort pleaded guilty to two counts - conspiracy and conspiracy to obstruct justice - in a Washington, DC, courtroom, where prosecutors said the agreement with the longtime GOP operative includes his cooperation, according to CNN.
Manafort was accused of concealing from the IRS tens of millions of dollars in proceeds from his Ukrainian patrons and conspiring to launder that money through offshore accounts in Cyprus and elsewhere.
It is not clear whether any agreement with prosecutors would require him to cooperate with special counsel Robert Mueller's ongoing investigation into possible coordination between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation.
More news: Florence Becomes A Hurricane, Takes Aim At US SoutheastFormer Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort is expected to plead guilty to federal charges as part of a deal with the special counsel's office.
Jackson is allowing prosecutors to mention that Manafort was campaign chairman in August 2016 when press reports, including articles by The Associated Press, called attention to his lobbying work on behalf of former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych and the pro-Russian Party of Regions.
In commissioning white-shoe USA law firm Skadden Arps to write a report evaluating the trial of Yakuovych's political opponent Yulia Tymoshenko, Manafort helped the government of Ukraine hide the tremendous sum paid to the firm for this work. Manafort's attorneys had argued that the trial should be moved to Roanoke, Virginia, because the intensity of publicity in Washington made it impossible for him to receive a fair trial.
At a rally in August, Trump said: "I feel very badly for Paul Manafort".
Manafort told the judge he wants to plead guilty. In an April court filing, Mueller's prosecutors defended their pursuit of Manafort, even though he wasn't charged with crimes related to Russian election interference. The jury could not reach a verdict on 10 other counts.
Manafort's Virginia trial generated considerable attention from the public and the media.
