  • Lloris pleaded guilty yesterday to drink driving

Hugo Lloris will remain Tottenham's captain despite pleading guilty to drink-driving in court on Wednesday, manager Mauricio Pochettino has confirmed.

The 31-year-old, who has made more than 200 league appearances for his club since signing in 2012, was stopped when officers saw his auto being driven at 15mph in a 30mph zone in Gloucester Place, central London, in the early hours of August 24.

Lloris, who won the World Cup with France in July, was fined £50 000 at Westminster Magistrates' court.

The court heard police in an unmarked vehicle spotted Lloris' Porsche Panamera driving at 15mph (24kph) in a 30mph (48kph) zone.

He has also won more than 100 global caps and lifted the World Cup during the summer, after France beat Croatia 4-2 in the final. "Forty days later, he was arrested in central London", said the lawer. There was vomit inside the auto and Lloris needed to be helped from the vehicle.

"The spectacular fall from grace is not lost on Mr Lloris", he said. "I made a mistake and now I need to pay".

His lawyer said Lloris knew he should not have been driving and had called a cab after a night out.

"He had booked a taxi but unfortunately the taxi cancelled at the last minute". He made a mistake and he's suffering all the punishment of society.

"He said "Gaffer it's a massive lesson for me". He blundered once in the final against Croatia but his team still prevailed 4-2.

When sentencing, the magistrate said the fine represented the seriousness of the offence as well as the goalkeeper's financial means.

Dele Alli and Hugo Lloris have been ruled out of Tottenham's Premier League match with Liverpool at Wembley on Saturday.

Lloris, of East Finchley, north London, signed for Spurs from Lyon in 2012, making 209 appearances in the Premier League and keeping 75 clean sheets.
