But the party's top lawmakers ultimately decided against such course of action, in part fearing the backlash from a made-for-TV moment that would only help the Republican Party, and impede any chances to stop the nomination of Kavanaugh, the report said. He asks what makes a judge a good one and how he goes about deciding cases.

The protest came just as Democratic senators were staging their own opposition to Kavanaugh. "The voices heard at today's hearing are the noise of democracy", he said during the hearing, "and it's because we have before us a nominee to the highest court in the land whose record is being hidden from the public".

"Right now in America, far too many women of color can not access safe, affordable health care, and the ability to decide whether, when and how to raise thriving families is out of reach", the group told the Hill.

Kavanaugh is widely seen as the key to completing Trump's campaign pledge to overturn Roe vs. Wade, the 1973 decision which affirmed that American women have the right to abortion care.

"We can not possibly move forward", Harris, a potential 2020 Democratic presidential contender, said.

Not all Democrats have said they will oppose Mr Kavanaugh, and several may even support his nomination.

A protester is removed during a hearing of the Senate Judiciary Committee on the nomination of Brett Kavanaugh to the US Supreme Court.

They are concerned his confirmation would tip the balance of the Court firmly to the right. After conferencing over the holiday weekend, the Democrats barely let Kavanaugh's weeklong confirmation get started before taking over, essentially shouting down Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Sen. Senator Lindsey O. Graham, Republican of SC, who noted that he had voted for President Barack Obama's nominees Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan, was equally blunt. Republican Senator John Cornyn likened the interruptions to "mob rule".

Speaking on CNN, Mr Guttenberg said: "I simply said, 'Hi, my name is Fred Guttenberg, I'm the father of Jaime Guttenberg, who was murdered in Parkland".

Trump picked Kavanaugh to replace Justice Anthony Kennedy, who announced his retirement on June 27. Democrats are requesting documents from Kavanaugh's time as former President George W. Bush's staff secretary.

As the hearing eventually got underway amid constant interruptions from protesters, Grassley sought to turn attention to Kavanaugh's qualifications, calling him "one of the most qualified nominees-if not the most qualified nominee-I have seen".

With majority Republicans appearing united, it's doubtful the hearings will affect the eventual confirmation of President Donald Trump's nominee.

Kavanaugh sat, fingers intertwined, quietly staring ahead at the committee members as audience members screamed while being dragged out of the hearing room. He occasionally jotted notes on paper.

Brett Kavanaugh was in no mood to meet a father whose kid was killed during the Parkland shooting - snubbing his handshake attempt during a SCOTUS confirmation hearing. Video of the encounter was shared widely on social media.

"The president that nominated you has said, 'I will nominate someone who is anti-choice and pro-gun.' And we believe what he said", Feinstein said.

"The Supreme Court must never be viewed as a partisan institution". But the Democratic frustrations that boiled over on September 4 had been simmering for more than two years.

The mostly female demonstrators shouted out that Mr Kavanaugh would allow President Trump to pardon himself. Questioning will begin Wednesday and last at least two days. If he is accepted, he could begin work as early as October 1.

A security guard stepped in as Mr Kavanaugh turned and left the witness table.

Democrats say Kavanaugh's views on presidential immunity deserve special scrutiny now, given the ongoing investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election by special counsel Robert Mueller, which has already implicated a number of Trump associates.
