Former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick is the new poster boy for Nike. The quarterback has also drawn the support of star athletes from outside football since he began taking a knee during the playing of the national anthem to raise awareness of social injustice and police brutality in the summer of 2016.

While it's true that the NFL's ratings declined in 2017, pro football games still accounted for 37 of the top 50 watched television programs previous year, including six of the top seven, per Yahoo!

"They've estimated in the last 24 hours that Nike has had the benefit of $43 million in free media publicity from this", Morgan said. Both will end up on the right side of history.

Trump canceled a White House visit by the Super Bowl Champion Philadelphia Eagles in June after learning that most of the team's players wouldn't attend.

Trump said in an interview with The Daily Caller, a conservative website, that "there's no reason" for Nike to feature Kaepernick in the campaign.

When Donald Trump called the gridiron kneelers "sons of bitches" it was pointed out that black males between 15-34 are nine times more likely to be killed by law enforcement officers than other Americans.

Nike signed Kaepernick in 2011 and kept him on its endorsement roster over the years.

Kaepernick filed a collusion grievance against the NFL earlier this year alleging that the league's owners had conspired under pressure from President Trump, to keep him out of the league. Some on the right, including Trump, saw the protest as disrespectful to the military, with Trump calling for players who protested to be fired. He added: "I stand with Nike, all day, every day".

Nike has already seen stocks tumble and talk of a boycott trend on twitter. Although he faced backlash during his football career for kneeling during the national anthem, Kaepernick also made a decision to just do it.

"We embrace the role and responsibility of everyone involved with this game to promote meaningful, positive change in our communities", said Jocelyn Moore, the NFL's executive vice-president of communications and public affairs. "The social justice issues that Colin and other professional athletes have raised deserve our attention and action". Joshua Perry, a former Ohio State University football player who retired from the NFL in July, ask people to donate their Nike items to people who would appreciate them.
