The National Hurricane Center said Florence was at Category 4 strength and will produce extremely risky conditions for land in its path.

Hurricane Florence appears to be taking aim at the largest U.S. Marine Corps base on the East Coast.

"Pretend, assume, presume that a major hurricane is going to hit right smack dab in the middle of South Carolina and is going to go way inshore", South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster said.

At this statistical height of the Atlantic hurricane season, Florence was being trailed on east-to-west paths by Hurricane Helene near the Cabo Verde islands, and Tropical Storm Isaac. The storm was centered about 835 miles (1340 kilometers) southeast of Bermuda and moving west at 7 mph (11 kph).

Although it is quite a distance away, swells generated by Florence will begin to affect Bermuda Saturday, and Florida along with most of the East Coast of the USA will see increasing waves and rip currents this weekend. Forecasters also warned of a rising threat of life-threatening storm surge, along with the damaging winds. It is too soon to say where, when or how severe the rainfall might be.

A hurricane watch, which means hurricane conditions were possible, has been issued for most of the coastline of South Carolina and North Carolina, specifically, from Edisto Beach, South Carolina, to the North Carolina-Virginia border. Their governors declared states of emergency Friday and Saturday.

Governors of North and SC and Virginia declared states of emergency far ahead of the approaching storm.

Residents in evacuation zones are urged to have a plan to flee if the order comes. "Action today can avoid losses due to Florence".

Maria - which killed at least 3,057 people, most in Puerto Rico - is believed to be the third costliest tropical cyclone on record.

"We don't panic, which is why we are amused that water was so depleted a week out".

The price gouging law that protects consumers from scammers is also now in effect after Cooper's state of emergency declaration. "Most of the area will be uninhabitable for weeks or months".

"So, I'm prepping with some bottled water, a couple puzzle books, and making sure all my electronics and back-up batteries are charged", she told CNN. The team will be best able to support requests for assistance from local agencies and respond to the storm as needed.

But it was still too early to predict an exact path for the storm.

Some forecast models showed Florence slamming into land by late next week, while others indicated the storm would curve away from the shore.
