Novak Djokovic defeated Juan Martin Del Potro 6-3 7-6 (7-4) 6-3 to win his third US Open title in NY.

"I don't feel sad that I couldn't win Grand Slams because of them".

The Serb now only trails his two greatest rivals, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, who have 20 and 17 respectively.

Argentine third seed Del Potro had been seeking first Grand Slam title since 2009.

Del Potro, a sentimental favorite after nearly retiring in 2015 due to four wrist surgeries, couldn't overcome Djokovic's steely baseline game.

But Del Potro needed more than just goodwill to beat Djokovic at his best, he needed his mighty forehand to be flawless and the rest of his game to back it up. He was just a little better than Del Potro at the key moments - especially in a 95-minute second set, where he saved three break points in an eighth game which stretched to eight deuces and 20 minutes.

All that frustration was washed away when he struck the overhead victor to clinch victory over Del Potro, Djokovic falling to his back, arms and legs spread savouring the moment. "1-2-3;-Osaka-at-No. -7-after-US-Open-title">rightfully back atop the rankings for the first time in 3½ years, with Nadal at No. 1, Federer at No. 2 and, as of Monday, Djokovic at No. 3.

"When I had my surgery I could truly understand what Juan Martin was going through when he had surgeries that kept him away form the tour for two or three years", added Djokovic. "I think right now, what I'm feeling is very tired.so hopefully as that wears off I'll start feeling more happy". Victory also means that 50 of the last 55 majors have been win by the "Big Four" of Federer, Nadal, Djokovic and Andy Murray.

The sixth seed had suffered in the ferocious heat and humidity through the early days of the season's final Grand Slam but dropped only two sets for the tournament and none since the second round.

This is Djokovic's second straight Grand Slam singles title this season following Wimbledon 2018 and a 14th overall to tie American Pete Sampras for third all-time.

The match was played with the roof closed at Arthur Ashe Stadium because of rain.

After the controversy surrounding Serena Williams' defeat by Naomi Osaka in Saturday's women's final, a high-quality match between two of the top male players ensured tennis was once again the talking point. Three times, Djokovic steeled himself. "I don't know when will be my last tournament in this career, but I'm excited to keep surprising myself doing things like this".

Despite defeat, world number three Del Potro remained proud after an achievement he never thought would have been possible during his injury hell.

But he is a strong candidate for any title when he is fit and the fact he has the most number of victories by anyone over world number one player just goes to show how risky he can become when he is without any injury.
