  • Coca-Cola, Aurora in talks about making cannabis-infused drinks: report

Coke and Aurora would likely develop beverages that will ease inflammation, pain and cramping, the BNN report said, citing sources familiar with the matter.

Aurora is Canada's third-largest pot company, with a market value of approximately $7 billion.

Coca-Cola has already been diversifying as consumption of soda continues to decline.

Aurora has also expressed interest in cannabis drinks.

Constellation Brands, a giant spirits company that counts Corona beer among its labels, bought a multibillion-dollar minority stake in Canopy Growth, a Canadian medical marijuana producer.

Canada legalised cannabis for recreational use in June this year.

The beverages in question wouldn't focus on THC, the psychoactive component of marijuana of which Coke has no interest, but rather CBD, which is widely used in wellness products.

Coca-Cola said yesterday that it was "closely watching" the market for cannabidiol (CBD) drinks after a report suggested that it was close to making one.

Both companies in separate statements said they were interested in cannabidiol-infused beverages but refused to comment further. "The space is quickly evolving". The addition of a trendy line of infused-drink (s) could see Coca Cola leverage its existing products to help it gain new stream of revenue. If the deal comes through, it would mark a significant foray into the cannabis sector for the beverage company.

Aurora Cannabis is Canada's third biggest cannabis producer and the company confirmed it was in talks with Coca-Cola concerning cannabis infused drinks.

Coca-Cola Co. stock was up about 0.25% on the reports Monday, trading at around $46 a share.

"It's going to be more of the "recovery drink" category", the source told the BBC.

But testing the waters of cannabis-themed drinks could backfire, he said.

However, U.S. corporations are still cautious about taking steps into a business that remains illegal under U.S. federal law.

The US Food and Drug Administration approved the epilepsy treatment Epidiolex, which is the first cannabis-based drug allowed in the United States.
