  • Virginia governor orders mandatory evacuation for part of state ahead of Hurricane Florence emergency management website crashes

Its center will move between Bermuda and the Bahamas on Tuesday and Wednesday and approach the coast of SC or North Carolina on Thursday, the National Hurricane Center said. Carrying winds of up to 140 miles per hour as a Category 4 storm, Hurricane Florence is expected to strengthen and become a Category 5 storm Tuesday.

It's not just North Carolina that is "taking Hurricane Florence seriously", either, in SC and Virginia residents have also declared states of emergency following the updates on the storm.

US landfall could come Friday between Charleston, South Carolina and Norfolk, Virginia, the Hurricane Center said.

Helene is a Category 2 storm that's even farther off the coast than both of the other storms, but it's not expected to ever make landfall.

Hurricane Florence continues to grow in size and magnitude as it barrels toward the U.S. East Coast.

South Carolina's governor ordered the state's entire coastline evacuated starting at noon Tuesday and predicted that 1 million people would flee.

The evacuations in Virginia will begin at 8 a.m. Tuesday for about 245,000 residents in part of Hampton Roads and the Eastern Shore area. Forecasts call for 25-38 cm of rain in the hardest-hit areas, possibly more if the storm stalls over land, as expected.

The Pentagon said Monday it has sent an advance military team to an emergency operations center in Raleigh, North Carolina, to coordinate with federal and state partners.

States of emergency were declared in the Carolinas, Virginia and Maryland.

The Navy ordered all ships at the world's largest base to sea on Monday to avoid the battering of Hurricane Florence.

With South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster saying: "Now is the time for your family also to prepare and stay tuned for more updates".

Florence has been classified as Category 4 storm with sustained winds of around 140mph (220km/h). Maryland on September 10 also declared a state of emergency.

Residents boarded up their homes and stripped grocery stories bare of food, water and supplies.

"We are not going to gamble with the lives of the people", McMaster, a Republican, said.

The US Navy said it was sending almost 30 ships from coastal Virginia out of port to ride out the storm.

Florence was packing maximum sustained winds of 130 miles per hour, with higher gusts, the hurricane center said in its 8 a.m. ET update. It says total rainfall could reach 30 inches in some places, prompting life-threatening flash flooding from SC to Northern Virginia.

Many newcomers have moved to the coast in the almost 19 years since the last strong hurricane - Floyd - threatened the area.
