  • British Airways breach sees hackers take-off with customers' payment details

"We will continue to keep our customers updated with the very latest information", the airline said.

Information stolen includes customer names, email addresses, home addresses and payment card information - but not travel or passport details.

Specifically, the affected period is from 10:58 p.m. BST (2:58 p.m. PT) on August 21 and 9:45 p.m. BST (2:45 p.m. PT) on September 5.

"The breach has been resolved and our website is working normally".

He said enough information was stolen to allow criminals to use credit card information for illicit purposes, and that police are investigating.

Cruz said the carrier was "deeply sorry" for the disruption caused by the sophisticated crime, which was unprecedented in the more than 20 years that BA had operated online.

"The moment we found out that actual customer data had been compromised, that's when we began an all out immediate communication to our customers".

All affected customers had been contacted on Thursday night.

BA apologised for the error on flights to Tel Aviv and Dubai, but customers said they were angry their tickets were not being honoured.

If you have been struck by the data breach, it's advisable to contact your bank or credit card provider.

"I've not heard anything from them on this and I've just had to cancel the card I used". Probably won't get it back before we fly (ironically).

Meanwhile, BA customers expressed their frustration with the airline on social media. It said it would pay for a credit check for customers, and promised to reimburse them for any losses.

British Airways is the largest airline in the United Kingdom and one of the largest in the world.

The airline's recent data breach follows a massive incident that saw round 10 million records containing personal data of Dixons Carphone customers accessed.

But hackers were able to access customers' names, email addresses and credit card information, according to law enforcement authorities in the United Kingdom.
