Brie Larson takes flight in 'Captain Marvel' first trailer

  • The trailer for 'Captain Marvel' will likely drop this week

Any kid who grew up in the 90s (when the movie is set) will have memories of going to Blockbuster as streaming video wasn't yet available. Something about him feels villainous to us, and we can see him being a big reason why Carol doesn't remember her past and he could even be responsible for the Skrull/Kree conflict's connection to Earth - or maybe he's just fanning those flames to accomplish some other selfish goal.

Viewers are then treated to a number of flashbacks starring the character, hinting at her previous life on earth, while co-stars Jude Law and Samuel L Jackson also feature.

The first teaser trailer for Marvel's highly anticipated Captain Marvel film, starring Brie Larson, is here.

Now if you'll excuse us, we're gonna have to go back and watch that trailer a few million more times while we wait with feverish anticipation for the movie to land in theaters.

Human or Alien? In short, yes, Carol Danvers is a human being who grew up on Earth.

One power from the comics not seen in the trailer is flight. "It's hard to explain", Danvers replies. After being caught in an explosion, Carol's DNA becomes fused with that of Marv-Vell, and she becomes a superhero named Ms. Marvel. She's also capable of absorbing massive amounts of energy. Both unite together to fight the galactic war between two alien forces. The main Skrull baddie will be played by Ben Mendelsohn. We've gotten to see some official images of Larson suited up, but that was nothing like seeing her in action. Prior to that, she operated as Ms. Marvel for nearly 30 years, headlining her own solo series in the "70s and '00s as well as enjoying multiple stints as one of the Avengers" heavy-hitters. Either way, she's out of it in the next shot - already falling straight into the trailer's first '90s cliché.

The villains? Ronan (Lee Pace) and the Skrulls, extraterrestrial shape-shifters, first seen in Guardians of the Galaxy. Her promotion to Captain Marvel in 2012 in the comics that serve as the inspiration for the upcoming film came with a costume upgrade as well, one that uses that symbol as well as the blue and red color scheme. However, the trailer raises as many questions as it answers, especially for fans who might not be familiar with the Carol Danvers of the comics.

The helmet and mask also simultaneously turns Captain Marvel's hair into a mohawk.

Arriving more than two years after Marvel Studios announced the casting of Larson as Captain Marvel, the almost two-minute teaser sends Carol (literally) crashing back to Earth, and into the path of Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury, just as the planet is caught in the middle of an intergalactic war between two alien races.
