  • The new feature will help users identify suspicious links shared within the platform

Election related information is a core area that WhatsApp is looking at, along with questions on processing problematic events, virality, and digital literacy.

And whether any information would be sent to external servers?

WhatsApp has not issued a statement about when this feature will be available or if it will be limited to certain regions. Moving forward, WhatsApp will check automatically the genuineness of the site links that are being forwarded via its forthcoming "Suspicious Link" function. Will this feature be able to fight against malicious links?

The app will then highlight the link in red if it deems it to be a potential threat. If the user decides to open the link, WhatsApp will push an alert again asking the user if they want to proceed, the report adds.

There is always the choice to block other users.

The Suspicious Link Detection feature is still under development before it gets rolled out on a wider scale.

But how exactly, this has not been shared.

WhatsApp has been under pressure from Indian authorities lately for a slew of killings that allegedly originated from hoax messages sent on the app.

WhatsApp is going through a critical phase in India due to the spread of fake news leading to mob lynching.

Last week, we had reported that Whatsapp is offering upto $50,000 grant to social scientists inorder to discover ways to stop the madness of fake news. While such attempts to educate people might sound ridiculous in 2018, many people in India, and other emerging markets, connect to the internet for the first time on their smartphones.

It's also now testing a feature that labels forwarded messages so that recipients can distinguish whether it's already been doing the rounds, or if it was composed by the sender.

We're used to hearing about "fake news" in the context of American politics, but this modern-day phenomenon has spread all over the world.

In its reply to the Union Ministry of Information and Technology, WhatsApp had said it was "horrified by these bad acts of violence", and called the situation a "challenge that requires government, civil society and technology companies to work together".
