  • Sharif loyalists arrested as former PM returns to appeal conviction

Hours before his imminent arrest, Mr Sharif said, "Maryam and I are coming back to face prison, and even if they send me to the gallows, we know that freedom can not be won without sacrifice".

"Despite seeing the bars of prison in front of my eyes, I am going to Pakistan", Sharif told Pakistani journalists this week in London, where he vowed to re-assert "civilian supremacy".

PTI chief Imran Khan on Thursday said that whoever goes to receive ousted Pakistan prime minister Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Maryam Nawaz at the Lahore airport "must be a donkey".

Meanwhile, flights that were to arrive at Islamabad airport this morning have been diverted to Lahore airport.

According to news agency AFP, Nawaz Sharif, who has a mass appeal in his country, told cheering supporters: "Put Nawaz Sharif in prison for life, send him to the gallows, but you will have to answer the questions that the people of Pakistan are asking and they will stop only after getting answers".

They will be brought to Pakistan's Lahore.

Both leaders of the PML-N is expected to land at Allama Iqbal International Airport in Lahore at 6:15 pm today on a foreign airline, Etihad Airways, via Abu Dhabi.

An accountability court sentenced Mr Sharif in the Avenfield case to 10 years in prison for owning assets beyond his income.

"Sharifs will come back on Friday", he said as he brushed aside the rumours of their flight cancellation.

A PML-N official told Reuters that police began monitoring his house and the residences of a number of other party activists on Wednesday night.

To prevent PML-N workers staging a hero's welcome on the streets, authorities said they will arrest the father and daughter upon landing and transport them to the capital Islamabad by helicopter, local media reported.

"No logic can defend the 30-day detention of our workers", Shehbaz upheld. "The Election Commission of Pakistan must act and order release of our detained workers". "We will not accept the results of the July 25 polls if pre-poll rigging is not stopped", said Nawaz Sharif's brother Shahbaz Sharif.

Once again, appealing that the "injustice" and arrests of workers be stopped, Shehbaz urged the caretaker government setup, "Please pause, reflect and change the course". As per ANI, the PML (N) president said, "We thought Bangladesh is a baggage and it slipped off our hands". "Judge's verdict stated that there was no proof of corruption against Nawaz", he said while adding that he was sentenced based on presumptions.
