The actual prison break took "a few minutes", according to France's Justice Ministry, but the plans had been unfolding all morning.

In 2103 Faid used explosives to blast his way through five prison doors and escape from another prison, briefly taking four wardens hostage and managing to stay on the loose for a month and half before being captured.

And this isn't the first time the well known gangster has made headlines.

He was serving prison for a time duration of 25-years for a failed robbery in which a police officer was killed. In 2013, he literally blasted his way out of prison using dynamite but was recaptured six weeks later.

The helicopter was set afire and found by police hours later, a source told the paper.

A third man in the prison courtyard, as reported, guarded the helicopter and its pilot, a flying instructor whom the men had hijacked in a nearby airfield and forced him to take part in the dramatic escape.

"It was an extremely well-prepared commando unit that may have used drones to survey the area beforehand", BBC quoted France's Justice Minister Nicole Belloubet as saying.

Three masked gunmen armed with assault rifles landed a stolen helicopter at the prison and plucked Faid out at around 11:20 a.m. on Sunday.

In the 1990s, he led a gang involved in robbing banks and armored vans. He was arrested in 1998 after three years on the run in Switzerland and Israel, according to the French media. All the hostages were released unharmed.

His infamy has increased since then following appearances in several television shows and the co-authoring of books recounting his past and rise as a criminal in the tough suburbs of Paris.

Although he was sentenced to 30 years in prison for these activities, he was released on parole after 10 years.

That same year, he wrote a book describing growing up in Paris's notoriously crime-ridden suburbs and starting his life of delinquency.

He wrote that he had watched the film dozens of times to ideal his bank-robbing prowess.

They managed to whisk the convict away in a helicopter which had been flown into the prison courtyard.

One of the prison supervisors added, "In the corner of his (Faid) mind, he never lost the idea of escaping. Behind all his manners - he is very polite - he always hid his game", the supervisor said.
