  • World War 3: North Korea warns US attitude is 'highly REGRETTABLE' as tensions soar

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe praised on Sunday U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's conduct at denuclearization talks with North Korean officials who accused America's top diplomat of making "gangster-like" demands.

Speaking at a news conference in Tokyo with his Japanese and South Korean Pompeo responded directly to North Korea's Foreign Ministry's comment, after his two-day trip to Pyongyang, that the USA employed a "unilateral and gangster-like demand for denuclearization".

North Korea's state media said its "firm, steadfast" resolve to abadon its nukes may falter after the U.S. demanded unilateral denuclearisation during two days of talks in Pyongyang.

But in a harsh response issued just hours after Pompeo arrived in Tokyo, the North blasted the discussions, saying the visit had been "regrettable" and that Washington's "gangster-like" demands were aimed at forcing it to abandon nuclear weapons.

Earlier, Pompeo and Kim Yong-chol both said they needed clarity on the parameters of an agreement to denuclearise the Korean peninsula that Trump and the North Korean leader had agreed to in Singapore.

Pompeo on Sunday said if the US' actions were "gangster-like" then the "world is a gangster" because the United Nations supported sanctions against the regime over its nuclear weapons program.

One mistake Richardson said the USA made in its negotiations with Pyongyang was "going first" and announcing the termination of some military exercises with South Korea. And, he and other US officials said the two countries, still technically at war after the 1950-53 Korean War, had set up working groups to deal with details of an agreement. It was the first time he had visited North Korea since the Donald Trump-Kim Jong-un summit. According to the report, North Korea may be intentionally trying to "deceive the U.S." by continuing these efforts in secret facilities.

"The road ahead will be hard and challenging and we know critics will try to minimize the work that we have achieved", he said.

One hoped-for breakthrough on this trip would have been the return of the remains of US troops killed during the 1950-53 Korean War.

Pompeo also said the date could move by one or two days, . and the process will begin to develop in the days to come.

And he said progress had been made towards agreeing "the modalities" of North Korea's destruction of a missile facility.

"When we spoke to them about denuclearisation, they did not push back", Pompeo told a news conference after two days of talks in Pyongyang that ended on Saturday.

He also said that the two have laid out a path for further negotiations at the working level so that the two teams can continue these talks.

Pompeo told reporters the countries had "made progress on nearly all the central issues".

Yesterday, Mr Pompeo appeared dismissive of these remarks, to the point of sounding slightly exasperated when questioned.

Skepticism has grown over how and whether North Korea will dismantle its nuclear weapons program amid US media reports that the country has continued to develop nuclear facilities. "So why wouldn't Kim Jong Un dig in his heels with Pompeo and press his advantage?"

"The settlement of outstanding issues surrounding North Korea, including nuclear, missile and abduction, will be extremely important to Japan, and that will also be extremely important for regional peace and stability", Abe said at the outset of the talks. We sell them $100 billion, they sell is $500 billion, we can hurt them more than they will hurt us.
