The knockout stage of the 2018 World Cup is officially set.

Germany missed a host of chances which could have sent them through, including defender Mats Hummels managing to miss a glorious headed chance from six yards out near the end of the game. They needed a 94th minute free-kick to defeat Sweden in the second match. Telstar Mechta is built with the same design elements as the Telstar 18, the ball used throughout the group stages of the World Cup, but adapted to reflect added intensity and opportunity the round of 16 brings, Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) reported.

But a 2-0 defeat in Kazan following stoppage-time goals from Kim Young-gwon and Son Heung-min condemned the four-time champions to an ignominious bottom-place finish in Group F.

This will be the fifth time Brazil faces off with Mexico in the World Cup, with Brazil having won three of those meetings and one being a draw.

Hundreds of Mexican soccer fans partied outside the South Korean Embassy in Mexico City on Wednesday to thank the Asian country for its victory over Germany that guaranteed the national team a spot in the knockout stage of the World Cup.

While this overloaded side of the bracket may seem a bit unfair to contenders looking to take home the World Cup, it will undoubtedly make for some awesome football. That's not likely to change against Mexico, who are more likely to play on the break the way they did against Germany. They have shown nothing to suggest that they didn't warrant their tag as tournament favourites, with only a slight stumble against Switzerland spoiling their record so far. Of course, it takes a couple of hours to look into that. But if Mexico could try to get Carlos Vela working down that side, cutting inside onto his stronger left foot against Luis's weaker right, then that could provide one avenue towards Hernandez and towards goal.
