Kirsten Gillibrand Becomes FIRST SENATOR to Call for Abolishment of ICE

  • Armed federal officers surround Portland ICE facility to contain ongoing immigration protest

President Donald Trump flatly rejected Democrats' push to abolish the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency on Saturday morning, saying there is "zero chance" it will happen.

Federal officials had warned protesters that parts of the camp blocking entry to and exit from the building were in violation of the law, having issued notices in the days before the clearing effort. "Do not worry or lose your spirit", Trump told ICE agents.

Trump has backed away from family separations amid bipartisan and worldwide uproar.

"Well I hope they keep thinking about it".

He added, "We should abolish ICE". Firefighters at one point misted the crowd to help people cool off. The policy led to hundreds of children being separated from their parents. But the agency has been criticised by liberal activists for its tactics, including workplace raids and the deportations of immigrants whose children are U.S. citizens. Before the border separation crisis, Harris had introduced legislation that would curb the expansion of immigration detention centers. "Seeing everyone together for this cause, it's emotional". Mr. Trump signed an executive order to end those separations, but many children still remain apart from their parents.

Shortly after appearing on the show, the senator took to social media to elaborate she had come around to support the opinion ICE was now a "deportation force" and needed to be replaced with "something that actually works".

"I care! Do you?" read Joan Culwell's T-shirt as she joined a rally in Denver.

"We care!" marchers shouted outside city hall in Dallas.

The Trump Administration isn't backing down.

The Democratic calls to scrap the agency underscore the balancing act the party is facing on immigration issues.

Numerous marchers also joined recent calls to abolish and replace Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the federal agency at the center of the "zero-tolerance" policy. "Next it will be all police".

Immigrant advocacy groups say they're thrilled to see the issue gaining traction. Drivers honked their horns in support.

Other protesters converged on the worldwide bridge that carries traffic between El Paso and Juarez, Mexico. Some of the demonstrations were boisterous, others were quiet. "I've never felt so personally threatened before".

"It hit me in the heart".

"I'm not a radical, and I'm not an activist", said Kate Sharaf, a Portland co-organizer. "We've got to come out while we still have a voice to be heard".
