Jordan says ceasefire agreed in southern Syria

  • The UN has estimated that 50,000 people have fled the embattled areas in southern Syria in recent days

The six admitted refugees were injured during Syrian dictator Bashar Assad's onslaught on southwestern Syria.

Zeid, a Jordanian prince, said there is a grave risk that the intensified fighting will see many civilians trapped, caught between government forces on the one hand and rebels and members of the Islamic State group on the other.

Eastern Ghouta is in that region and was taken by an assault that killed over 1,000 civilians and decimated several towns.

The strategic southwestern corner of Syria had been under a so-called de-escalation agreement reached between Russian Federation, the United States and Jordan in July of previous year, but the truce has unraveled in recent weeks.

"We received so many refugees and helped them and we will continue helping them with everything we have", said resident Awad al-Sirhan.

The government offensive that began June 19 has killed scores of people, wounded hundreds of others and forced more than 50,000 to flee to areas close to the borders with Jordan and the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.

Syrian rebels in Daraa have rejected surrender conditions proposed by Russian negotiators to end days of violence in the country's south, a rebel spokesman said on Saturday.

Israel and Jordan say they will not let refugees in.

But many residents of opposition towns worry that a deal struck with Russian Federation would only be violated later on, said Daraa activist Omar Hariri.

The Syrian government pressed ahead with its offensive to reclaim the strategic region that extends along the border with Jordan and the Golan Heights, and which was until recently part of a USA -backed and negotiated truce.

Fierce battles were still ongoing around Deraa city, near the Jordanian border, where the army had repeatedly failed to capture a disused air base, rebels said.

Speaking by telephone from Jordan Jabawi said that the meetings with the Russians took place in an area near where the provinces of Daraa and Sweida meet.

In the city of Dael, 15km north of Daraa's provincial capital, local authorities agreed to a reconciliation deal with the Syrian government last Friday that saw pro-Assad forces retake the city with little fighting, Syrian state news outlet SANA reported.

The army has already captured large parts of the eastern zone of rebel-held territory in Deraa province less than two weeks into its offensive, however.

Almost 100 civilians have been killed since the assault began on June 19 with airstrikes, rocket fire and crude barrel bombs.
