And the four were taken to the hospital in Chiang Rai as soon as they got out, though their condition isn't known.

Chiang Rai governor Narongsak Osattanakorn described the four rescued boys as in "perfect" health, despite earlier reports that one was being "closely monitored", calling the rescue "our masterpiece work".

In comments released by the government, Interior Minister Anupong Paojinda said the same divers who took part in Sunday's rescue will also conduct the next operation as they know the cave conditions and what to do.

Some took time on Sunday to pay tribute to Saman Gunan, a Thai Navy SEAL who died while trying to ensure the boys had enough oxygen. The fellow classmates and teachers from the same school have described to the press the preparations they have made for the boys.

In a letter of his own, coach Ekapol Chanthawong apologized to the boys' parents for the ordeal.

"Today is D-Day", Narongsak had earlier told reporters.

Four schoolboys were rescued yesterday from the flooded cave where they had been trapped for 15 days with eight football teammates and their coach, marking a breakthrough in a remarkable operation watched by the world.

A spokesman for Musk's Boring Co. tunneling unit, which has four engineers at the cave, said in an email Sunday that Thai officials had requested the device and that divers have determined it could potentially help the children through narrow, flooded cave passageways.

He said the next phase of the operation will resume in between 10 and 20 hours - probably late Monday morning or afternoon - as rescuers have to replaced empty compressed air tanks and perform other maintenance on the rescue system.

Sunday night divers escorted the four children, who were wearing equipment to help them breathe.

"The monsoonal pattern is present, meaning rain arriving in waves, which can't be adequately timed as they can escalate quickly", CNN meteorologist Gene Norman said Sunday evening.

The boys, aged between 11 and 16, went missing with their 25-year-old coach after football practice on June 23, setting out on an adventure to explore the cave complex near the border with Myanmar and celebrate a boy's birthday.

Less than an hour after the helicopter took off, Thai public television aired live video of a medivac helicopter landing close to a hospital in the city of Chiang Rai, around 60 kilometers (37 miles) from the cave. "The rescue team sets its own plan", he said.

But with the rainy season just beginning, it has become clear that the flooding which originally trapped the boys will only get worse in the coming days. And many of them are experienced cave divers, which certainly helps because this is a very unsafe operation. In addition to treatment areas, the hospital will also provide reunion rooms for the young boys and their families. "Good night and have a sweet dream", the Thai navy SEALs posted to their Facebook page.

Cave rescue experts have said they consider an underwater escape to be a last resort, especially with people untrained in diving.
