There are three types - total, partial and penumbral - with the most dramatic being a total lunar eclipse, in which Earth's shadow completely covers the moon.
Lunar eclipses typically occur only during a full moon, however on this instance the moon will be in flawless alignment with the sun and earth, also known as the blood moon. The moon thus colours red as it reflects the light refracted from the earth's atmosphere.
In total, the full lunar eclipse will last one hour and 42 minutes, the longest it will be this century.
This happens because blue light undergoes stronger atmospheric scattering, so red light will be the most dominant color highlighted as sunlight passes through our atmosphere and casts it on the moon.
Unlike with solar eclipses, no special equipment is required to observe lunar eclipses.
The Moon will be gradually covered by the Earth's shadow and the totality phase will begin at 1 am on July 28.

The eclipse, which is visible across the country, will take place from 11.54pm to 3.49am. Lunar Eclipse is also tied strongly to Astrology, and since its a complete immersion not seen before this century, astrologers have pointed out that it could have an extreme effect on people with Gemini Zodiac sign.
The full moon in July is also known as "mini-moon" because it is at the farthest distance from the Earth and seems small.
But people who live in North America are out of luck-the eclipse won't be visible from here. "Don't miss Mars - the bright orange "star" near the moon on eclipse night", the ASSA said.
Even if you're in North America, you can still watch the July 27 eclipse online through the Virtual Telescope Project's website, which will start livestreaming the eclipse at 2:30 p.m.
As well as being abnormally long, this eclipse, like most lunar eclipses, will appear a deep red with the sun's rays entering through the earth's atmosphere to project a blood-like glow onto the moon. The best view of the eclipse will be reserved for the Indian Ocean, because it will be facing the Moon. This will result in Mars coming close to the Earth, causing it to appear brighter than normal and it will be seen from evening to dawn towards the end of July.
