'Dark day for German football' after World Cup elimination

  • Both teams could potentially qualify

Joachim Low says he needs time to decide his future after Germany crashed out of the World Cup finals following a shock 2-0 defeat to South Korea on Wednesday.

The four-time champions allowed a pair of injury-time goals while knowing a 1-0 victory would have been enough to advance because of the result in the other group match.

In the first half, Germany controlled the ball 75 percent of the time, while South Korea had the best shots on goal.

It was only the second time in Germany's storied World Cup history that it had failed to progress from the first round, the last occurrence coming in 1938.

Germany, 2014 champions, are out of Russian Federation 2018 after group stages, their first exit in the World Cup group stages in 80 years.

"For us it's a huge disappointment".

Mexican fans in Russian Federation for the World Cup also expressed their gratitude to one South Korean they found outside the stadium in Ekaterinburg following the defeat to Sweden.

"Where we go from here, we'll have to talk about it calmly". I couldn't imagine that we would lose to South Korea.

Germany's team of superstars could only look on in shock in the final minutes of the match as USA referee Mark Geiger called for the video assistant referee to intervene after the unmarked Kim had bundled his shot past Germany 'keeper Manuel Neuer from a corner early in stoppage time.

South Korea controversially claimed their first goal in stoppage time after yet another VAR blow-up saw a potential off-side call land in favour of the underdogs.

The result sparked huge celebrations among the legions of Mexican fans in Russian Federation, and also back home in Mexico City, not least when locals mobbed the South Korean embassy and hoisted the ambassador onto their shoulders, before marching him around in thanks for his team's heroics in helping Mexico into the last 16.

"They are very important players, strategically and mentally", Son said.

With no option other than a victory to advance, Low inserted Mario Gomez and Muller for Khedira and Goretzka.

While their loss to Mexico could be explained by a lack of cohesion between defence and midfield when coming up against counter-attacks, there is little excuse for failing to even score against a Korea side who came into the game without a point.

"Germany are the defending champions and No. 1 in the Federation Internationale de Football Association ranking, so I thought about what mistakes Germany might make, because they probably felt they would be able to beat us - that's what everybody thought", South Korea manager Shin Tae-yong told reporters.
