  • Zimbabwe's president Mnangagwa survives assassination attempt at rally in Harare

Medics attend to people injured in an explosion during a rally by Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe June 23, 2018.

Political analyst and Tshwane University of Technology senior lecturer Ricky Mukonza, said Mnangagwa, who has previously survived assassination attempts', could still be at risk of another attempt on his life.

The MSU hub is one of the six innovation centres to be launched at other State universities soon.

Just a few hours after the attack, Mnangagwa took to Twitter to issue a statement calling for peace and unity. "We must not speculate ahead of investigations", Charamba said.

The ministry expressed the UAE's solidarity with Zimbabwe against all forms of violence and attempts to destabilise this friendly country, and wished speedy recovery to all those injured during the attack.

"Some people are trying to kill our dream".

President Cyril Ramaphosa has been joined by local opposition parties in condemning the blast.

"In the past 38 years political violence has been a permanent feature and an anticipated ritual. which we must expunge". "There have been multiple attempts on the President's life over the past five years". He added: "I can assure you these are my normal enemies".

Elections in Zimbabwe have been marred in the past by violence and charges of electoral fraud.

The events in November that brought Mnangagwa into power were driven by deep divisions in the ruling Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front (ZANU-PF) party, with different factions vying to take over after the nonagenarian Mugabe eventually relinquished power or died.

The incident would not have much of an impact on Zimbabweans living overseas as they had established themselves in those respective countries.

"The end game in ZANU-PF succession politics will be long and it's ramifications dire".

"We stand behind the people of Zimbabwe".

He said the attack was aimed at sowing "mayhem and turmoil" and described it as an "assault against democracy".

Police spokeswoman Charity Charamba and Health Minister David Parirenyatwa, who has been monitoring victims in Bulawayo hospitals, did not respond to calls for further comment.

For ordinary voters like Harare-based Crispen Pfundirwa, their main concern was now security. "These sort of things don't happen in Zimbabwe but in Iraq and Iran".
