  • Tunisia prepare on Sunday afternoon for the England game while wearing full match kit

England's World Cup 2018 voyage has begun, and Gareth Southgate's young Lions got off to the best possible start, as Harry Kane's injury-time victor against Tunisia gave them their first victory in their first match at a major tournament since 2006.

England are monitoring the fitness of midfielder Dele Alli after he suffered a minor thigh strain during the 2-1 World Cup win over Tunisia on Monday.

England played well for the first 25 minutes but struggled after Tunisia equalised after converting a penalty from the spot.

Harry Kane's late victor for England against Tunisia on Monday was a "huge moment" in the team's evolution at the World Cup, according to former England defender Gary Neville.

Jordan Henderson believes England's team spirit was pivotal in their 2-1 victory over Tunisia.

"Even at 1-1 I was really proud of the performance", said the manager, whose team join Belgium in claiming maximum points from their first game in the section.

The Three Lions dominated the opening exchanges of the game but their wastefulness in front of goal was becoming a worry until Harry Kane finally prodded in the opener following a scramble in the box.

The Three Lions could have had more opportunities had referee Wilmar Roldan seen Kane wrestled to the ground during two second-half corners.

"You go until the last second", Kane said, "and I'm absolutely buzzing".

"Unfortunately for England, you can't trust us".

South Africa 2010 started badly and never really got going for Fabio Capello's team before they were blown away by Germany in the round of 16, while Brazil 2014 was a disaster of two defeats and a draw against Costa Rica before finishing rock bottom of the group. If they don't think that was a penalty, we have to deal with that.

On the basis of the opening few games at this tournament, VAR can be a success but it won't be if the officials fail to act upon such obvious fouls. Yes it was a big win for us, a big boost - winning the first game always is - but then the next game becomes the most important, then the one after that... it goes on and on.

They paid the price when the North Africans were rightly awarded a penalty before the break. "There were a lot of decisions against us and maybe there was a bit of justice at the end".
