A day later England captain Harry Kane matched that feat thanks to his hat-trick against Panama after his double downed the Tunisians in game one.

Far sterner tests will come in the form of Belgium and the subsequent knockout games, but you can't blame the majority of the nation's fans for being on cloud nine.

He banged in two first-half penalty kicks and unwittingly got his heel in the way of Ruben Loftus-Cheek's shot from 20 yards in the 62nd minute.

They had also never before scored five first-half goals and it is only the third time in England's history, out of 24 attempts, when they have begun any major tournament by winning back-to-back matches, emulating their World Cup teams of 1982 and 2006. The Panama fans were dancing in the aisles of the Nizhny Novgorod stadium.

"Not many players score a hat-trick at a World Cup, so I'm proud of it". We've drawn a lot of conclusions but Panama are a small, young child in football, other teams don't really decipher our style of play.

With a negative statistic out of the way, let's go back to the positives.

But the failure to concentrate and keep a clean sheet, as well as those sloppy opening moments, certainly signals an area that must be improved on by Gareth Southgate and his staff.

England thrashed Belgium 6-1 in what seemed to be a one-sided clash.

England are now top of the group, despite the two countries having the same number of points, goal difference and goals scored.

Nobody would have thought that after just two games, England would have scored eight goals.

The quarter-final of the World Cup will take place July 6 at 7pm and the semi-final on July 10 at 7pm.

But he's more concerned with Kane's tally and his chance to beat Ronaldo and others to the Golden Boot for the tournament's top scorer.

The Three Lions slowed down the game in the second half, keeping the ball as much as possible, but Kane was determined to be the third English player ever to get a hat-trick in a World Cup.

England recorded their biggest-ever victory at a World Cup despite the sapping heat in Nizhny Novogrod, playing with youthful zest and imagination against their disappointing opponents.

That Kane's two matches were against Tunisia and Panama might have skewed things in his favour, but there is no denying that finally, after 32 years, an England striker has come to the party at a World Cup.

However, they did score their first World Cup goal through Baloy to spark great celebrations from their supporters, who can at least return home with that treasured memory.

The early goal by Kieran Trippier opened the floodgates for England. The centre-half used his head brilliantly to not only score but to defend very well against an aggressive Panama side.

'I think we'll be more pragmatic but with the pace and danger we've got at the top end of the pitch, we're going to be a threat to anybody'.

Maybe the most frightening thing for England fans, who have supposedly learned to lower their World Cup expectations after so many disappointments, is actually true.

It was a performance the hopeful, yet too often underwhelmed, Three Lions supporters wanted, and there was little bother in cruising to an effortless win. Lingard had a superb game, scoring a world-class goal and showing typically exquisite movement off the ball.
