St. Lucia, June 16: Caribbean Premier League (CPL) outfit St. Lucia Stars have signed banned Australia batsman David Warner in their squad for the upcoming season beginning August 8, the West Indian club announced on Saturday.

The opener was given a nine-month suspension from global and state cricket in March after admitting attempting to alter the condition of the ball during the Newlands Test against South Africa.

While he is prohibited from taking part in worldwide cricket and domestic cricket in Australia, he is free to play overseas, and recently signed up for the inaugural Global Twenty20 Canada league in Toronto starting later this month.

"We are excited to bring David to the St Lucia Stars".

Warner was not initially a part of their plans and was added as a replacement for compatriot D'Arcy Short who had to walk out of the league due to national commitments. "David is arguably one of the greatest batsmen of the modern era and a winning player", Stars General Manager Mohammad Khan was quoted as saying by cricket.com.au.

David Warner of Australia plays a shot.

Warner and fellow-offender captain Steven Smith and fledgling batsman Cameron Bancroft were barred from playing worldwide cricket for twelve months, but were allowed to participate in club cricket. After playing in Canada, he will return to Australia for the Darwin Strike League in July.

Warner had some memories to cherish when he played on the Caribbean field. The month-long tournament will also feature fellow Aussies Shane Watson and Chris Lynn, apart from other foreign stars like Hashim Amla, Martin Guptill, Ross Taylor and Imran Tahir.
