Robert Lewandowski said after Poland were eliminated from the World Cup with a 3-0 defeat to Colombia that his side lacked the quality needed to progress, admitting "it's not like we lost by a whisker".

The 22-year-old enjoyed his first taste of World Cup action on Monday as he impressed after coming on as an 80th minute substitute in the 2-1 victory over Tunisia.

After Colombia and Poland lost opening matches to Japan and Senegal, respectively, Sunday's match was a must-win - a draw wouldn't have done much for either side.

Colombia, who reached the quarter-finals for the first time in Brazil four years ago before bowing out to the hosts, are in a similar situation after a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Japan - they were forced to play with 10 men for nearly the entire game.

The respite was brief and on the next Colombia attack Juan Quintero found Rodriguez lurking inside the box and the midfielder chipped a delightful cross into the danger area for Mina to head the ball into the net from point-blank range. "He's played at the top level for many years and he's the Colombians' driving force".

Cuadrado teased and frustrated the Polish defence in a positive start to the second half, and after Colombia 'keeper David Ospina bravely denied Robert Lewandowski when he latched on to a risky long ball, Colombia turned up the heat.

Rodriguez bagged two assists on Sunday night but his pass to find Cuadrado for the third goal was truly a piece of artistry.

And with Lewandowski and his team-mates hurting, ruthless World Cup fans have unearthed an old tweet the Poland captain sent to Rodriguez previous year. "We wanted to counter and play fast, but they played better".

"It's very important for us, for Colombia, but we have to continue in this way and fight until the end".

Poland began to fade as the first half wore on and some standout play from Juan Fernando Quintero and Cuadrado set Santiago Arias away into space on the right, but the full-back saw his cross turned away by Michal Pazdan at the near post.

In contrast, this was another disappointing display by Poland, who lost to Senegal in their group opener.

Following Colombia's convincing 3-0 win over Poland, the FC crew assess Los Cafeteros' chances of beating Japan and advancing to the round of 16.
