  • AMC Theatres unveils $20-a-month rival to MoviePass

Last summer, AMC Theaters immediately voiced its stern disapproval when MoviePass announced its coffers-draining $10 movie-per-day unlimited plan.

AMC will soon be offering its vast clientele a premium subscription service called "AMC Stubs A-List", which will give theatre-goers the chance to watch three movies a week for $19.95 per month. AMC has upped the ante by allowing its subscribers to watch any movie at its theaters at any available showtime and in any format, including IMAX and 3D.

AMC's Stubs A-List launches June 26, and it should be interesting to see how it does in comparison to Moviepass.

AMC Theatres chief executive Adam Aron pointedly said in a statement that AMC's program is at a "sustainable price".

While MoviePass is a cheaper option, Variety said AMC will also offer their subscribers screenings in IMAX, Dolby Cinema and RealD. However, with MoviePass you get to see more movies per month at less of the cost, and you can go to nearly any theater in the United States to use the service (not just AMC theaters). Since MoviePass slashed its monthly fee, questions have mounted over the long-term viability of its economic model. In April, the company's majority owner, Helios and Matheson Analytics, acknowledged in a regulatory filing that there were doubts about MoviePass' ability to stay in business. AMC's announcement also took some more digs at MoviePass, stating "No waiting after enrollment and no special credit card to be carried, AMC Stubs A-List is web- and smartphone-based". On its official Twitter page, MoviePass accuses AMC Theatres of "repeatedly" attempting to sabotage them while looking to turn a profit of its own. If you don't have time to make it back to the theater multiple times a day, you can see all three movies the same day, as long as there is a two-hour buffer in between showtimes. However, the company disclosed in May that it was losing more than $21 million per month.

Meanwhile, outside of the three ticket per week allotment, the service also offers all of the existing benefits of an AMC Stubs Premiere membership.
